1. The Right Fit
To ensure you have chosen the best size Cool Coat® to fit your dog, three key measurements are required.
It is important you take the time to measure correctly. It may take two people to complete these measurements. We offer eleven sizes to fit the majority of breeds.
2. How To Measure
Stand your dog squarely with their head up and looking forward when you are measuring. Your measurements will not be accurate if your dog is sitting or lying down when being measured.
Using a soft measuring tape, follow the natural contours of your dog’s spine. Do not stretch the tape straight out, otherwise this could result in an incorrect measurement.
When ordering the MOST important measurement is your dog’s back length, as this determines coat size. Ensure your dog is standing squarely, with head up. With your dog looking straight ahead, measure from base of neck (point where neck joins the body) to base of tail (point where tail joins the body). Use a soft tape when measuring allowing the tape to follow the natural contours of your dog’s back. Do NOT pull tape tightly (see photo above for proper way to measure back length) otherwise this could result in an incorrect measurement. Use the breed size chart below to help determine coat size.
Important Note: This is a general guideline as sizing varies by breed and within a breed. Please check the Size Chart carefully before ordering.
Measure your dog’s chest (torso) just behind the front legs at its largest point
Measure your dog’s neck around the thickest part.
3. Choose Size
Choose Cool Coat® size based on your dog’s back length. When ordering it is important you include the chest and neck measurements as it will allow us to assist you in ordering the best fitting coat for your dog. Our Cool Coats® fit most breeds. Please Note: For brachycephalic breeds*, the most important measurements are neck and chest circumference. Even if the cool coat is a little short or a little long (the coat can easily be folded under) it will still be very effective at keeping your dog cool.
*Brachycephalic breeds refers to dogs having a flat face and short nose. The most common breeds include: the Pug, English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Boston Terrier, Shih Tzu and Pekinese).
English Bulldogs derive significant benefits by wearing cool coats. However anyone owning this breed knows they can be difficult to fit as there tends to be a wide variation in their measurements.
*To measure an English Bulldog for a MustLuvDogs Cool Coat we recommend:
First take your dog’s neck and chest measurements. You can skip measuring your dog’s back length as it is not applicable for this breed.
In most cases, a size 24 provides the best fitting coat for an English Bulldog. This size generally allows ample room in the front chest area to provide adequate coverage. While this results in a longer coat length, it benefits this particular breed by providing extra coverage and protection from the sun’s rays in the rear and thigh area and helps prevent them from overheating.
Please remember this is a guide only as every dog is unique….
When you receive your coat… please fit the Cool Coat® on your dog first without soaking the coat. Keep in mind the Cool Coat® will expand by approximately 1″ in length once it is wet. If the size you purchased does not fit your dog, click here for instructions.

If your dog’s back is between sizes, or if your pet has a stockier build, we recommend a cool coat one size larger for a proper fit.
